The responses to this redraw of the above Avengelyne scene talked a lot about how much more expressive the redraw is and that it tells a story better than the original. Out of curiousity, I blocked out the dialogue of both with my fingers and noticed that while you can still generally tell what’s going on with the redraw (which is part of why it’s so great), you really don’t know what’s going on without the dialogue in the original, so it gave me the idea to turn it into a contest!
Going by the suggestions offered by people yesterday, this is going to be more than a caption contest. So here are some options of what you can do with the above image (I edited out the dialogue so it’s context free):
1) A short story, or caption/blurb/dialogue of what’s going on or what she’s saying.
2) Editing the photo to include word bubbles or thought/dialogue/narration boxes, sound effects, etc…
3) Some combination of the two. You could even make a macro.
I was thinking of dividing the contest into more categories (caption, short story, picture edit) but then I’d want to offer a prize for the winner of each category, and I only have one prize to give out right now, so maybe in the future we’ll do that, but for this month, I’ll just choose a winner from the above.
The only contest rules are: one entry per person, and no rape jokes or racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ablism, etc… Creativity and humor are generally what I’ll looking for. :)
The character at the bottom’s name is Avengelyne, and the character on top of her is named Coral, in case you need that for your submission. :)
The prize for this contest will be provided by the awesome Sooz, the creator of the webcomics Reliquary and Patchwork and Lace. :) The winner will receive a free commission sketch from her!
So that’s pretty cool. :) If anybody is interested in offering future prizes (whether art commissions or something else) that would be really great, and you can contact me by email or tumblr messaging. I want to be able to offer a prize because a) I think it makes the contest a little more fun and b) I want to help promote amateur artists if I can. :)
The contest will be open until July 7th, so you have 2.5 weeks to get your submission in. :) You can submit through reblogging, messaging me on tumblr, a disqus comment, by email, or put a caption in below.
So go for it! What’s going on in this panel?
