Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

Battle of the bizarre bone legs.

Battle of the bizarre bone legs.

Black Canary’s legs appear to come out of nowhere.  But then again, I’m not imagining her in some spine-broken pose, and, if Batgirl is any indication, the artist is.

Oh dear. Only two issues in and poor Babs has broken her spine again!

OW.  I have no words.

Apparently Slipstream can move so fast, he can wrench Stephanie’s left arm and leg out of their sockets.

Maybe it’s the costume.

I don’t think her left leg is actually a leg.

AH!  No.  It is not.  You can even see her other butt cheek there in front of the leg.  That can’t be a leg… maybe it’s a new form of Bat-rope she’s swinging from?
Also, her left hand is a copy of her right hand, which makes it look broken.  According to her gauntlet spikes, her arms are both in the same position, yet both thumbs are facing the same direction? -_o

Given how her costume is armored there, it looks like it’d be even harder for her to make that twist.

This is from Batgirl #13 drawn by Ed Benes.
It’s not so much an Escher Girl as it is an Escher Bathroom, designed to let us see Barbara’s boobs twice on the same panel.
The only way we should be able to see her from the front twice is if there’s a second mirror off the edge of the panel. But if the image was reflected twice, it would be un-reversed (so where we see on the left, her hand is holding her shirt, that should also be on the left of the image if it was a double reflection). Also, the mirror’s top and bottom edges are parallel, so it’s pointing straight at us, which makes it basically impossible for it to reflect off a mirror we can’t see.
And now I’ve probably put way more thought into this than Mr. Benes did. Ironically, this should have been a boobs-and-butt panel. If she faced the mirror, seeing her from the front in reflection makes sense.

This is sort of off topic, but I found it intriguing.  Yes, that mirror doesn’t make sense, and I think it’s point is to draw Barbara from another angle so that the reader can see her boobs and face from the front.   Also, because it’s Benes, and he only draws one female face, I thought that was Mary Jane at first.
(I’m actually impressed Benes didn’t show her butt at all in a scene where you can see her from 2 angles.)

Please enjoy this little lapse from my self-imposed Batgirl/Supergirl comics retirement to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas! (or Hanukah, or Kwanza, or Festivus, or whatever your winter holiday of choice is). Indulge in all the cookies you want. It is an intricate part of what this time of year is all about.
Last year’s Batgirl/Supergirl Christmas
*Fun Fact! My Killer Croc is totally inspired from my favorite Killer Croc comic of all times by the great Calamity Jon Morris.

The pose is cool, but still Boobs and Butt pose.

This is actually quite cute, so her boobsocks and boobs and butt pose are a bit odd.
