Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

She’s like a boob flounder.

One of her legs is shorter than the other. And I’m still trying to figure out how it’s working behind the fore leg.
Something about it makes me think that the artist meant to have her legs crossed originally (or sketched from a model with her legs crossed).

She must have drunk the potion of slanted breasts.

I knew the one leg, two boobs thing looked familiar to me. Tucci’s used this before:

Haven’t done a redraw in awhile. That’s probably because I’ve solely been watching the 1984 Sherlock Holmes for the past two weeks. <3
The problem with Shi is that if I correct the anatomy and take away her ballerina feet, the original pose looks silly. She’s thrusting her chest up, dipping her chin, and looking completely unlike what I imagine a woman with a spear to look like. Take away the spear and you get a, ahem, pole dancer. I messed around for awhile what stance I would take if trying to stab someone with a spear. It’s much like fencing. Torso and pelvis face the same direction, but you’re actually looking perpendicular. One foot points in the direction of your eyesight and the other to the side, like a right triangle.
I tried to keep the original lines as much as possible, since they, unlike everything else, were good. But there was no way I was going to try and redraw whatever odd samurai face-mask thing is behind Shi. Not happening.
This is what I came up with. As for the shirt and socks, have you ever tried wearing a breastplate and reed sandals against your bare skin? Don’t. It chafes like the dickens. Anyone who has ever worn armor knows you always have something between you and it. Obviously, whoever draws Shi has no concept of wearing actual armor.
Don’t get me started on the two-boob breastplate.

I like it! :D I like how you turned her little halter top into an armored vest by adding another layer underneath it. Also she’s no longer a boob flounder!
I’m giving you your own tag by the way (and for the regular redrawers I get, I’m going to go back and tag all your redraws too, you guys are so awesome) :)

Anatomically, my own art is still pretty poor… But I figured I could at least do better than this. Sorry for not red-lining!
The former snake-woman ties back her annoyingly voluminous hair, gets some kind of underarmor, and gets help from a chiropractor. There, done. :D

As an Asian girl who wants to see more Asian heroines in fiction who aren’t exotic sexy ninjas, you made my day. That’s honestly one of the best Shi re-imaginings I’ve ever seen (not that I’ve seen many). I love it! :D
Edit: Sorry, I screwed up the quote thing. The last paragraph is mine >_>

So that “turn female characters into Hawkeye” thing I linked to has now apparently turned into a full blown thing, which is awesome. xD For those that don’t know about it:

http://thehawkeyeinitiative.tumblr.com/

That’s the tumblr for it and

http://kotaku.com/5965037

That’s the Kotaku article about it. :)

It also makes me happy that a lot of pictures from the Escher Girls archives are there. :D Part of why I made this blog is so that whenever people needed images like this, there’s a handy archive for it, and I’m glad people are using it!

I ship Eschergirls and The Hawkeye Initiative.

Uh oh. Nothing good can happen from shipping us. o:

How is contortionist sex not a good thing?

You mean something like that? (Just pretend that’s Hawkeye).

There’s a nice symmetry to how she looks like a bow herself.
