Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

This is supposed to be funny but it’s not.  1) The only problem highlighted seems to be that it’s a man wearing it, not a woman.  2) There’s no point lampshading something if you don’t fix the problem you highlighted. e_e

This is an interesting picture because that’s the twisted spine lunging pose SO MANY female characters are drawn in.  What’s interesting though, is that usually the twisted spine is so we can see her chest and a piece of her butt.  In THIS case, he’s being twisted so we CAN’T see his chest or his butt.

drawology:

If Harry Potter were rebooted by DC
noteable changes:-Harry is a jerk-Ron is a goofy jerk -Hermoine frequently has sex with Ron, Harry, and even Draco

This is far too hilarious, sad and true. xD

Hello!

I’ve been wanteing to jump in the recent Tumblr trend of having male superheroes get a similar costume treatment than of their female peers, but then I discovered your awesome blog and I was inspired to go one step further.

If I may, I’d humbly present you Crimson Starwizard

Thanks a lot and hope keep up at this blog for a long time, it’s pure gold! :D

Thank you Celebrenithil!  I feel honoured to have inspired such awesome parody art! (I’m sure Deodato is blushing too)  And don’t worry, I still have a ton of images in my backlog to come.

And without further ado, here’s Celebrenithil’s hilariously awesome Crimson Starwizard:

On the topic of last post, here are two deliciously amusing links that have been passed my way.  They aren’t about drawn women, but they are about how women are posed in real life, for advertising and pin-ups and how they’re just about as practical and realistic as some of the art on this tumblr.

Sociological Images - Yolanda Dominguez: Exposing the artificiality of women in fashion

Peta Pixel - Men photographed in stereotypical pin-up poses

Maybe these comic artists aren’t that far off after all!

Another great submission from Celebrenithil!
Go Make Me A Sandwich - Blade and Soul: YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG
Great take down and break down of the problem with the proportions that women are given in a video game.  Sadly, this proportion issue is one that a lot of comic art has too.  Check it out!  (the picture is from the blog post, I hope comic artists take note)

Worst Idea Ever

Okay so I had this idea last night, since I still don’t have a Halloween costume or concept.  Let’s have some audience participation!

I’m going to let YOU help decide what I’ll do for Halloween!  But there’s a twist.  I want you to pick a picture from the Escher Girl archive (preferably not one where people are flying because I can’t fly) and the one that gets the most votes, I’ll try my best to a) do the costume (within my means) and b) get into that pose and photograph it.

So starting now, send me a request (or more than one) using the Ask form, and I’ll tally up the top requests and then have a poll to decide the winner.

My spine hates me already.

This is a photo with my camera of a magazine in the doctor’s office. My first thought was… Emma Watson can do the butt and boobs pose! I checked online for similar photos and the closest I can find is http://justjared.buzznet.com/photo-gallery/2549732/emma-watson-mtv-movie-awards-2011-01/, so I now conclude that someone let one of your featured artists do the photoshopping.

At least we know it’s not Ian Churchill because her limbs still look human width (and her face still looks like a distinct woman), and it’s not Deodato because her legs don’t look like plasticine.  The rest of you, come stand in front of the class please.

I don’t know if it’s photoshop or what, but i came across this ad while looking at a Japanese magazine. Scared that they kind of make some of the drawn ones look healthy.

When I and others say we want comic book heroines to look more like real people, I don’t think this is really the solution we had in mind.

Edit: To clear it up, yes it is photoshop.

I know I just said before that I don’t normally pick on the costumes, and I know this is Shi, Vampirella and Lady Death, but my friend had a caption that was too good not to share.

They escaped from a nudist colony and had to dress themselves by cutting apart a single very small outfit between the three of them.
