Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

I stumbled across this DOFUS game while wandering around Pinterest. It is described as “the number 1 MMORPG in France.” (Cool?) Anyway, their homepage is decorated with the above drawing. Is she fighting? Dancing? Having some kind of seizure? It begged to be submitted.
To be fair, I suppose the cat-man on the other side of the homepage is weirdly shapely too. His pose is impossible and silly, but I gather that depicting characters fighting as if they were floating in zero-g is something of a style in anime and manga? Not quite the same as the bizarre, twisty T&A pose of the girl.
Why is there a need to make female cartoon characters ‘sexy,’ anyway? Her proportions — The over large head, hands, and feet; the short, thick legs and skinny little arms — are almost childlike. IMO, it really doubles the ick factor of a pose like this. Gross.

I’m trying to figure out what her role is given her costume.  Warrior guardian of South Beach?

The Srams in the game Dofus

So I’m playing this game called Dofus, which is very popular in France, and I’ve always been bothered by the differences between the male version of the Sram character, and the female version.
This is the male version :

Sram male

and this is the female version :

sram female

How could they think for a minute that it would be logical (and okay) for the male version to be a skeleton and for the female version to be a living woman ??

And don’t get me started on the boobs and butt pose… -_-

Anyway, I love this tumblr ! :D

This image has been on this blog before, but I didn’t know that the male version was a skeleton.  I guess having a skeleton of a woman would ultimately a) be not sexy and b) not look “female” enough, since with a skeleton, there’s no long hair or breasts that are the usual ways that people indicate a character is meant to be female.

Though, in this case, it’s the reverse of the usual, because technically, the man is the one with the organless torso (literally). xD

Redraw of Dofus’ Sram Female character
First I wanted to say that I love this tumblr. Here done.
So I saw this yesterday and I couldn’t help myself.
I asked myself what are the not anatomical things that help when guessing the gender of a person and the answer was simple : clothes.
So I gave her a dress (and yes if she were a living woman we’d see her boobs but I wanted to show the rib cage).
I tried to blend some of her character design (the puffy hood, the “shoes” and the long gloves) with the character design of  the male sram. Something that I absolutely couldn’t keep were the daggers : seriously they’re thicker than her fingers, you can’t stab someone with that! They almost look like a plastic beach shovel, you know, for kids to dig sand…. So I changed them but well I’m not the best when it comes to swords/knifes/daggers….
Ah, and I made her kinda floating because the male one is so it give the indication or the impression that he can use magic while the sram female is clearly standing on something which make her look more like a human assassin than a magic/fantasy creature.
Also I didn’t like the crazy look of the male character so I gave mine a mischievous one. :)
(ps : sorry if I did any mistake, English is not my first language…)

I like the design a lot.

After seeing this: http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/44547405233/the-srams-in-the-game-dofus

I decided to give a try of making a sexual dimorphic, but still skeletal female. I sorta tried to stick with the style as well (half-assedly) and kept a few elements of the original design (such as the sleeves/bootiethings). However, I made it ratty like the male’s costume. Basically, the only thing different—structurally—from the dudes, is that our sweet lady skeleton here has wider hips, as actual female skeletons do.

I attempted to give her a skelebikini, but it sorta looked a bit silly. So, instead, she gets a raggity dress.

Don’t mind the wonkiness of the 20 min sketch. Was laying down concepts. Also, I know next-to-nothing about this game, sooo…was just going on guesses and air.
