Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

I don’t even know where to start.

The dragon DNA graft takes a little getting used to.

So I saw this picture, and I just HAD to redraw it. I’ve never done a redraw before, but here’s what I did for it.

First I basically tried to figure out what was going on with her skeletal structure and stuff. Not noted here, but her right hand down there is actually backwards. The thumb should be towards us, not the pinkie.

Then, I tried to understand what was going on with her body position and stuff. I assume this was meant to be an “angle” shot, though the perspective is… pretty wonky, too. I guess it’s supposed to be looking “up” at her, but regardless…

I twisted the angle and figured she’s probably supposed to look like this. Still… It’s kinda awkward, and I really wanna fix those proportions.
So I tried a sketchy redraw to fix her proportions and such. Same pose, but now she’s not all fucked up anatomically. I let them have their “sexy” still and tried to keep her breasts and such the same size.

This is what I ended up with when she was done. Same pose and idea, and I decided to let them keep what the deemed sexy, but more realistically and without the anatomy butchered.

Here she is a bit of a more “aggressive” stance, though her arms are still awkward and such. I’d fix those, too, but I didn’t really feel like doing any more with this, so I just kind of left it at that.
And there you have it. My first redraw. Gaaahhh… That was horrid.

That’s pretty good!

Since others have broken apart the anatomy of this most horrid of pictures, I will just redraw it. Because I was low on time due to college, I used my Art S. Buck mannequin to speed up the process. (Her right elbow is anatomically correct. Really. It is.)
With that said, I despise how so many artists sacrifice any kind of story or continuity. With her center of balance, the only option left to her is to fall over. We’re watching a snake girl with broken arms fall over. That’s about it. I think the intent was to see a strong spear lady show off her skills. We came for a martial artist. We got a damaged pin-up.
That is an insult to comics.

I don’t think it’s an insult to comics, because I don’t know what that would really mean.  But I do like your redraw!  I wonder if the back foot looks a little awkward, but I don’t know what you referenced for it, so maybe it isn’t as awkward as it looks to me.  Love the staff behind her head like that.

Dragonsnake Chick Redraw (my first!)
I’ve been following this blog for a while, and redrawing all sorts of things in the privacy of my sketchbook, but here’s the first that I’ve actually managed to upload; it’s based on this cover. http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/30058409981/spidermimi-submitted-i-dont-even-know-where-to
While I like redesigning silly costumes as much as the next person, and I love changing silly cheesecake poses into awesome badass poses, for this one I thought I’d try my hand at keeping the focus on sexy since it is sort of a pin-up rather than an actual fight scene, and just correcting the anatomy and perspective, since in the original we are somehow looking up at her boobs, down at the top of her pelvis, and then up again at her bizarre between-the-legs butt cheeks.
I tried to stay true to the general curve lines, but with actual human joints and stuff. Her right arm still looks sort of weird, but it’s at least not dislocated anymore and I did model the pose to make sure it’s possible (though not super comfortable).
I did make a point to keep her boobs big, but funnily enough, once you draw a shirt over them they become somewhat less visible. Weird how that happens. I did keep a little underboob in there as an homage to the original artist, but only where her raised arm would conceivably pull the shirt up.
It’s still a silly costume though.

I just found this gem in our local bookstore.
It’s the German cover of the first volume of Ikki Tousen by (in)famous Yuji Shiozaki, published by Carlsen Manga.

So exuberant she’s coming apart at her seams.
