Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

So I thought I’d attempt a redraw of this Witchblade pictue, even though I have a hell of a long way to go as an artist myself. More than likely you can see my own mistakes, but that’s the beauty of the redraws - constructive criticism comes your way!

My initial thought was simply that it was an issue of “swivel waist”, which doesn’t make sense either way to me.
This is how I laid out the first problem with the picture for myself

Then the first redraw came along, after which I realised that there were other problems with the original artwork

Here’s how I tried to sort out these issues

And the conclusion I finally came to:

It was easier for me to change her pose to one where she’s sitting rather than standing. Right now I’m dreading to think of where I went wrong with my finalised image, but I hope to get constructive feedback from people!

I think you have a good attitude for your redraw. :)  Try your best at it, but also be aware of your own limitations and open to feedback.  It’s a good attitude for any artist in general, I think. :)

Hi, this is my first redraw, critique appreciated - I want to learn!
So I did my best to try and fix her blank expression and twisty spine - I know this pose is vaguelly possible, but the extreme nature of it bothered me a little, cos it looks like she’s straining to show bum cleavage and boob cleavage at the same time. Instead I tried to follow le-mec’s video about suggesting rather than showing everything at once and tried to make her pose a little more naturalistic?

I like this redraw quite a lot.  It’s both sexier and more natural.  And it’s more enticing with her looking over her shoulder at us.
