Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

That’s not actually her.  That’s the wolf pretending to be Red Riding Hood, his human costume just isn’t that convincing.

I’ve wanted to do one of these redraw/fix posts since watching this blog. I am not an anatomy expert but I couldn’t…I just… something had to be done.

First, to clear the air, the beast is grabbing her arm in the original not her body. After connecting her torso with her waist I can understand how some might have thought she was being squeezed to death.

I made sure to include all her organs as I redrew her. I also thought that keeping her arm to her side would be a tad more comfortable then…whatever it was doing before.

I don’t draw monsters so I didn’t touch him really. I only repositioned his horn and tried something with that gigantic hand.

More fur was a personal preference, the overly muscled gigantic arm was distracting me.

Lots of fun. It’s still an eye sore but I hope that my adjustments will be slightly less painful then before.

Nice redraw. :)  I really like what you did with it!

Also, because I know people can’t mind-read me, I should probably clarify: I actually knew that he was grabbing her arm, but I couldn’t think of a good joke for that, so I figured, if he squeezed her arm, it wouldn’t be a stretch to joke that he’s squeezed the rest of her too.

Oh, J. Scott Campbell…
The usual Campbell flaws are there (endless sameface, broken spines, etc.), but I just cannot fathom what is going on with her right leg. Is it supposed to be a leg-shaped stool for her to straddle? Is Campbell trying to slip in phallic symbolism? And I really hope that’s not the toe of her right boot peeking from underneath her left ankle, because that would be altogether frightening. The colorist, Nei Ruffino, does such gorgeous work, both by coloring other artists’ lines and creating her own, much more interesting and anatomically correct figures, at least.

She’s got the butt foot thing that seems to be a growing epidemic in fairytale land and yes, one of her legs seems to have fallen off.  That better be one AMAZING healing kiss from the prince at the end.

I liked the idea behind J. Scott Campbell’s picture of Rapunzel (lots of hair + gorgeous coloring), so I decided to take a closer look at it and see if I could do something a little more anatomically correct. I started out by outlining the body to get a better view of the issues.

I knew there was something wrong with the body before this, but….oh god. I wonder if Campbell bothered to do this at all? How did he look at this and go “YEP THIS IS SEXY”?

Here’s some of the problems I saw, in my crappy handwriting. His feet really do look like Barbie-doll feet, her legs aren’t the same length (since one of them is bent and one straight, but they end at the same spot), she has no room for organs in her waist, and there’s something weird going on with her hips. On the upper body, I felt like her arms were awfully skinny, and her head possibly too small. (My mom later pointed out that something weird is going on with her left arm as well, so we spent some time posing and trying to figure it out. I think it’s too bent or the hand is too high up or something.)

My version:

Maybe not quite as ~sexy~ as the original, but I was pretty pleased at the end. One foot is flat and one is pointed, so the bent leg is now the same length as the straight one. Hips and waist are more normal sized. Arms are more nuanced than those skinny sticks Campbell drew and the head is (hopefully) the right size. My fingers and toes are a little off, but overall I think she’s lookin’ pretty good and not monstrous there. I had fun with it, in any case!

That’s pretty good.  Nice catch on the uneven legs, because I don’t think I noticed that originally.  I’m amused and heartened that your mother also looked at this and helped point some stuff out.  Escher Girls: fun for the whole family! :)

Twisted fairy tale

And I mean twisted in more ways than just one.

Hi. I came over this while browsing Deviantart and since it’s official cover for the comic book I couldn’t resist to send it to you. Battle-swimsuits aside, it’s that “oh my gosh, it’s two hot, almost naked chicks from European medieval set fairy tales, so let’s give Cinderella a sort of katana sword to make it look cooler - because katanas make everything at least 100 % cooler!” thing that irritates me beyond words. But what do I know? It seems to be super effective, because by the look of things Cinderella already cut Snow White in half and her upper part of body, turned almost ninety degrees by the power of the mighty slash of her adversary (no blood of course, it’s fairy tale, people!) is starting to slowly slide down of her lower torso. And I thought original Grimms’ fairy tales are brutal.
I’m also not really sure that’s going on with Cindy’s legs, they look detached somehow, but I can be wrong on this one. Also it’s funny how many of comic book artist are unable to draw a hand holding a sword or anything like that. They simply draw clenched fist with handle glued on top and bottom of it. That or Snow White here has a super long thumbs as well, because Cinderella hands are okay.

Lots of men fantasize about women’s sleepovers and pillow fights in lingerie, but they have no idea how serious it gets.

(I hope I have submitted this riiight.)

So I decided to redraw this post: http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/34854651070/charlie-submitted-twisted-fairy-tale-and

But before I could get along to it I accidentally made them male:

Make of it what you will. Somehow Male!Cindy is missing a nipple, but we can’t all be perfect, what with the swivel waists and dislocated body bits. But I digress.

Here is the redraw.

That first one is so great.

Hello! I’ve been lurking around this blog and I really love your blog! I just got on Tumblr recently, so I’m still learning the ropes around here.
Anyway, I found this pic and…. two things
1) the girl in the blue swimsuit is clearly doing a boobs and butt pose
2) It just baffles me that they decided to put a picture of two swimsuit models playing around as a cover picture of a horror comic.

To be fair, Grimm’s Fairy Tales isn’t a horror comic.  The boobs and butts pose is interesting though given that it looks like she’s just being lightly splashed, so the it looks a bit incongruous to me that she’s reacting with such a twist.

So the Eschergirls Tumblr posted this comic cover, and I really wanted to redraw it so that it’d look more natural and dynamic and fun.

I like this redraw a lot.  I think it captures well the scene the cover was trying to show.  I like the expression you gave the unicorn too.  “Goddammit, I’m not a clothes hanger.”

Just…look at the feet. the feet! the agony. Also, the girl in red is doing a boobs and butt pose.

I know white haired girl’s doing the boobs and butt pose, but the feet and the pose of the black haired girl just makes me so curious what she’s doing.

You couldn’t figure out what the girl with the black hair in the swimsuit post was doing? It’s obvious!

Ah, boob-ball, an Escher Girl’s favourite pastime!
