Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

I’d like to say thank you to the developers of Guild Wars

Because for Guild Wars Factions, Nika has been from this :

To this :

I find her far more badass than with the ridiculous top and pose. And the sexy is still here !

Her shoes also seem to have improved for sneaking up on people without making noise.

Edit: does the picture work now?

Not that they’ve never had their flaws, but ArenaNet’s original Guild Wars concept art leaned more on stylized impressions and textures than T&A.  Thus it’s disappointing to see how much they’re trending toward “levitating spheres propping up bikini armor” with the sequel.  C’est la video games.

Okay okay okay so I am the worst artist imaginable but as soon as I saw “helium balloons” I immediately thought

EDIT: if anyone artistically talented wants to draw this, like, for real, that would be the best. thing.

Well, obviously, that’s what the “armor” is for!  Keeps them in place.

"What is that!"

So I’d like to share with you a few “gems” of Guild Wars 2 I’ve stumbled across.

The first one I found when leveling my Norn in Guild Wars 2. It’s a story quest image. Not a relevant one, mind you. Just the loading screen for it.

The minute it popped on my screen I remember screaming “What is that!” Let’s just try to sum up just “what” that is. A few things. A. The neck is way too odd looking and in way too odd of a placement. It should be quite a bit lower. B. Her breasts. So much to say here, but let’s just leave it at “I feel breasts don’t have helium in them”. They’re practically floating away. In fact they seem to be. C. Her outfit. That’s leather. She’s wearing leather. And her nipple is showing through perfectly. Leather does not work that way. There’s so much wrong with the outfit but the nipple showing through was just the end of it for me. D. That spine. I’m just going to leave that for you.

Also she’s a Norn. They’re more muscular then humans, which makes this so much worse.

Now, on to the second.

This is the statue and mural of Lyssa, this wouldn’t bother me so much if she wasn’t the Goddess of “Beauty, Water, and Illusions”. And I don’t think her pose was meant to be an “illusion”.

It bothers me that she represents beauty so we often see her in poses like this. I can accept her looking seductive or even wearing skimpy clothing, but the back breaking and impossible poses imply that’s the ideal beauty.

Though I would like to say I tolerate this a bit more because of how the Priests of Lyssa dress. (It doesn’t bother me that much, but at the same time they’re not breaking their spines to look sexy either.)

This last one may not count but I’d like to add it anyways, if I may. It’s not an Escher Girl but it is something I found a bit odd.

This is the female version of the Orrian armor set (light).

What I find interesting about this is the breasts are covered, the outfit literally designs giant breasts on top of it on a set made to be an undead. My Sylvari is almost completely flat chested but it still makes her look like she has these giant (and odd looking) breasts. I think what bothers me the most is they force this sexy look on something meant to look undead.

Also they made the wings these odd feathers because apparently women can’t have the cool looking wings the male set has.

This is made worse by the fact that Guild Wars 2 has a very limited amount of armor compared to many other games and many of the female sets are much worse.

But to me the worst thing about this is they made such a big deal about how much effort they put in the Charr and to make them respectable and putting women on the team to make sure.

Yet the humans have these odd back breaking poses, the armor often looks much worse on female then men, the Norn have gravity defying breasts, etc.

The game isn’t terrible but moments like this are hard to ignore and often leaves me feeling like I’m not enjoying the experience as much.

Wait.  So, even though your character is actually covered up, and is flat chested, they create a skin on top to make it look like she has big breasts and a boob hole?  -_o
