Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

This looks impossible if you focus on her spine curve… but the front part of her (belly to crotch) looks okay.  My brain hurts just trying to sort this picture out!

Huntress appears to have several swivel joints in her ribs.

This is actually one of my favourite pictures of Huntress.  But yeah, it looks like her leg got glued to the rooftop and she’s trying not to draw attention to it while she wrenches it free.

My friend showed me this and I was like, well her shoulder might be wrong but that looks oka- oh wait… that thing in front is her leg isn’t it?

Boobs…Boobs as far as the eye can see!
Don’t think I’ve seen you post this one yet, and it’s….frightening. http://thanosthemadtitan.tumblr.com/post/14845244111/wtf-does-this-really-exist

Sadly, that cover’s exaggerated boobiness isn’t that different than the serious US stuff.

Because this is TOTALLY how one swings through a window. Just look at Batman for proof! OH WAIT.
It’s a good thing that costume of her’s protected her from all that broken glass, right?

That was actually the 5th ever post on this blog, and so I’ll re-post it as another edition of “Best of Escher Girls” for those who haven’t gone back that far in my archives yet. :)

Had to attempt a redraw of this. I thought ‘Holy cripes, there are so many more effective ways of smashing through a window.’ On the bright side, in the original, she looks like she made use of her little crossbow thingy there. But on the downside, I find it’s difficult to leap through plate glass SIDEWAYS, WITH YOUR TOES POINTED. So I had her throwing her knee forward while protecting her face with her arms and also, uh, wearing pants. Gave her a Bat-Hat too. Because getting glass in long hair would suck.

I love the new position, it looks a lot more sensible for the action! :)

I saw this from this post.

I don’t think the pose is impossible, though the whole thing looks really odd.  Her face seems to be implying something else, also.

Hey there, I saw this panel from Batman/Huntress: Cry For Blood and I thought it would fit in well on your blog.
Haha, I always wondered what some of these superheroines would think if they saw their “Escher” forms :D I’d hate to think what the Huntress would do once she got hold of the artist.
Enjoy!

I see that the DC Universe has their own version of Rob Liefeld, and he’s a newspaper artist.
