Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

I’m not convinced yet…
Women are totally not objectified to sell merchandise… right? …

If she’s all the excitement I need, why do I need to play the game?  I’ve already got a picture of her thanks to the ad. :D

Apparently, there’s actually a Wartune ad that’s even MORE obviously selling sex than that one:

You have to admire the people behind these ads, they’re not pretending their audience might be interested in the game at all.

I sympathize with her.  I’ve had the nightmare where I’ve shown up to work in my underwear too.

This is from a game called Wartune and this is the starting screen where you choose a character. As always, the women have almost no armor, but this time the absurdity has leaked into one of the guy’s attire as well.
Modifying the armor so you can show your six pack? I don’t know if that is even more ridiculous than the women’s clothing.

There must be a metal shortage across the land.  Or he forgot his armor at home and had to borrow one of the women’s. xD
I think if I were their enemy, I’d always put my fortresses behind a forest of thorns.
Given the ads Wartune has, I’m wondering when six-pack dude will be in them promising everybody an orgy?
(And it’s just the one guy, the guy in the middle is wearing clothes, though in the darkened panel it looks like his skin.

You can see the male mage’s clothes and that the female mage is literally wearing lingerie.)

Wartune Does It Again
I came across this while reading a random blog. Although I know there are a couple of Wartune images in the backlog already this one stood out to me.

Wartune at it again!
I double checked to make sure this image hadn’t already been submitted to see that Wartune has been here several times already! However this one is, I feel, worse than the others because it has even less to do with the game than the rest.
First off, she looks like she’s at a beach party. Secondly she’s floating in mid air as near as I can tell… or her butt is perched on the very edge of a table and she’s straining to hold herself up with the hand not visible.
At the very least the text above her isn’t ‘MY body is your party’. So while it’s submissive and sexual (I’m here to pleasure you master!) it could be worse.

What if I just want to play a tactical RPG and not have my body owned by beach girl? -_o  These non-sequitur MMO ads always amuse me.

Another Wartune ad I haven’t seen on this blog yet.

The bottom text is ambiguously suggestive and made me legitimately WTF after thinking of all the other Wartune ads that have been sent to Escher Girls. I personally don’t really know what to think of Wartune anymore…

Her bikini’s side straps seemed to be glued to the contour of her boobs and ribs too…

Wartune is rated Adults Only by the ESRB now?

I know that Eschergirls is no stranger to Wartune, however this ad caught my attention in the “Really? Are they really claiming to have an adults only rating by the ESRB?” sense. A quick check at the ESRB’s rating search shows that no, in fact of the 32 titles across all platforms that the ESRB has given the Adults Only rating, Wartune is not in that list. In fact, Wartune is not rated by the ESRB, period.

So.. take the ongoing inappropriate over-sexualization of women to sell an online RPG/Strategy game, add a dash of “demon lady with no nipples”, a sprinkle of false advertising, and finally a pretty clear infringement of an ESRB trademark to try and give the sexual content of the ad some (undeserved) legitimacy. I’m not 100% sure why, but this ad seems more disturbing than the average Wartune ad.

Ohmygodohmygod sexy Adult Only action!!!  *click click click*  *register register register* c’mon c’mon…

YES LET’S GET TO THE SE-

http://kotaku.com/esrb-tells-browser-game-to-quit-bragging-that-it-was-ra-504523307
A follow up on Wartune and their ads (thanks to a commenter in the last post).  Apparently, the ESRB has told them to stop claiming to be rated Adults Only.  Also, if you go to that Kotaku article, you’ll see from the annotations in the pictures that most of their ads are stolen from other sources including Warcraft fan art, Everquest, Perfect World, and original fantasy art. >_<
On a similar note, after some googling and a tip from a reader, it turns out that the Pikachu from the Cyber Monster ad posted here recently was probably taken from fan art too.
Not only are they using weird non-sequiturs and pseudo porn to sell their games, apparently it’s not even stuff they own. -_o
