Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

I know Lady Sylvanas is dead but holy cow that anatomy looks messed up. If I was dead and my torso was a mess like that I’d be grouchy too. The background is really pretty but augh…D:

Did she die in that position and then resurrected stuck in it?

Does World of Warcraft count?
This is official Blizzard Entertainment artwork. I’ve had this mousepad for years and never really looked at it before I started reading Escher Girls.
I always thought something looked a little off on the Blood Elf and now I know why. o_O a VERY B&B pose.

If I was in the WoW-verse, I think I’d become either a chiropractor or an underwear distributor that specialized in non-thong panties and sports-bras.  I’d become rich.

i think this guy has been taking tips from this blog

And from the looks of it, it’s not paying off for him.

I watch this guy on deviantart, he has a lot of skill and a repetitive but nice style. He’s done World of Warcraft cards, commissions, and I’m sure other things as well. He almost always depicts women who are in shape and boobs that always sorta irk me, but overall nothing particularly Escher Girl ‘style’.

….Until this image.

At first I was like, ‘aw there are those weird perfectly circular armor huggin boobs again, all well.’ Then I saw the woman on the left. There the girl is supposedly in the foreground aiming at the goblin on the middle ground. Her body seems to have the ability to simultaneously exist in a profile and three quarter view all at once. All whilst aiming at a goblin who seems so much bigger than her, despite the fact she’s aiming inward from the frontal plane. (Don’t think I didn’t notice that if she was drawn to size accurately on that frontal plane, her butt wouldn’t be able to be visible.)

Not sure if any of you wow, but goblins are TINY. And now that I look again..not sure what pose that purple night elf is pulling there either.

My friend pointed out that we’ve got three different women, each facing a different direction, yet all their breasts are pointed at us.

A piece of “art” from the official World of Warcraft trading card game
Genzoman is a professional artist that does art for many official video game products.  He’s drawn a lot of art for the World of Warcraft trading card game, some of it much better than others.  Take a look at this piece featuring a lady blood elf, titled “Meltdown”.
Genzoman in general has issues with making rushed pictures with odd anatomy, hidden feet, and skintight clothing, but this one takes the cake.

World of Boobcraft

WoW is generally pretty good about gender equality in armour sets - when females wear skimpy armour it looks just as skimpy on males - although they do tend to add wild and random midriffs.

The newest tier Priest armour, however? Holy vacuum-sealed boobies, Batman. If you’re a WoW player and an Escher-girler, please drop them a line to request a change in this texture to something realistic. I don’t want to have to transmog away from what could be a pretty set simply because of this stupid sexualization.

But how would we know that’s a female priest without the big vacuum sealed breasts?

I opened a booster pack today to find this lovely demon lady doing the boobs n’ butt pose.

There’s only one boob (with a hint of the other), so it’s not technically a boobs and butt pose.  However, even multi-limbed female warriors can get stuck in quicksand and have to fight with their butts facing their opponent, apparently.
