Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

I feel like she’s made out of rubber, and you could keep scrunching her up and she’ll just pop back into shape when you let go.

I don’t know if you take reblog requests, or non-american submissions, but I have this.

When I was a young girl, my mother bought me some Pokemon manga. The image on the left was on the back of one of the volumes, as an advertisement. It has bewildered me to this day. Now, don’t get me wrong, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a really good series. But someday, some glorious day, I am going to slap the character designer in the face. This is why.
Also sorry if you got this submission before or something, my internet crapped out so it may have gone through twice or three times D:

I take both reblog requests and submissions!  The only thing I don’t take is non-professional art (e.g. non-pro Deviant Art) and I try to avoid commissions because I have no idea if the artist was told “draw a woman with both her butt and boobs facing me” or “I like women who can be folded into a drawer”.  Otherwise, go for it.  I originally started this tumblr with the hope to also add in video game, manga and fantasy art, but it’s easier for me to find comic art, so that’s why the tumblr is mostly of that.
There are actually two EVA pictures (the other is of Rei), so click on the link if you want to see both.  I chose Asuka for this post because that one was the most egregious to me.  She looks like somebody just folded her like a napkin.

A spot from Aquarion EVOL where the animators apparently forgot Zessica’s spine.

I’m presuming she’s NOT a centaur in the anime?

I’m not a professional but this looked weird to me.

It’s from Nisemonogatari Episode 6 by the way.

A different matter indeed.

Here is something the boobs and butt pose can be used for.

*gasp* Maybe all the artists have been victims of this technique in the past and therefore understand it’s effectiveness, and I’ve just been snarking them in ignorance!

yknow what pertaining to that

why do a lot of women feel the need to point out “BREASTS DON’T WORK LIKE THAT” all the time

w-we know

nothing works “like that” it’s a cartoon

you are not losing potential dates because your tits conform to earth’s gravity please calm down

true, but

in certain situations

i think it can be said

that there is a line image

and it has been crossed

In third frame, her tits detached completely.

Just saying.

I can’t speak for other women, but I’m not concerned about losing dates, I do think pointing out this stuff in fiction is hilarious though xD  And that totally qualifies as hilarity. xD

Hopefully I’m doing this submission right >.>
The cover art to the first Claymore DVD is…disappointing. Claymore has such awesome badass female characters with a variety of builds and looks, and there’s a boatload of action. Yet here we still have a nonsensical boobs and butt pose as the cover. Seriously, I don’t understand what’s going on.
Well, at least with her super healing factor, a broken spine can get fixed nice and quickly.

She looks like she’s confused about whether she’s throwing a fireball or sword fighting.
(Note because there’s confusion: Only the submitter said it’s a boobs and butt pose, I never tagged it as one.  The tags indicate what I think is an issue. :) )

Putting the Artist into Martial Artist

basementtroll submitted:

Okay, okay. It’s been a while since that hazmat suit joke so I guess I’m about due for another doodle. I figured I’d try for a more dynamic pose than most of the redraws attempt today. By the way, I’m a martial artist so I do know a bit about action and fighting giant monsters and stuff. (Fighting giant monsters? I do that every morning before breakfast. My alarm clock is an incredibly tenacious beast.)

Here’s what we’re starting with. We have a woman swinging a claymore (or a liberally interpreted claymore design if I want to be accurate) one-handed, her face turned upward and her gaze focused somewhere above her. Where is she looking? What is she swinging at? How on earth is her ribcage curving like that? Her lungs must be squished. Tragedy! But I hear she’s part youkai or something, so I’m sure she’ll live.

image

I thought the pose overall made more sense if she were looking over her shoulder. The pose looks like she could just step out and slice open the enemy at her right shoulder without getting all twisted up. As for the one-handed thing, I figured she was in the middle of bringing the pommel up and around to her other hand so that she could really let loose with a huge swing that left her mostly defenseless if she missed! That’s just how it works in manga. (Hey, I’m here to fix the art, not critique her fighting skills.)

image

(By the way, she does have five fingers on that free hand. I just didn’t bother finishing her index and pinkie fingers in a way that made sense. There are some other problems, too, but I’m not invested enough to fix anything here.)

Finally, here’s what I think she’s trying to kill:

image

I think she’s yelling “TAKOYAKIIIIII!” but I could be wrong.

But now she’s not shooting a sword-fireball at us! :(

Now I’ve never heard of Claymore before, but when I read Diana’s post with this photo:

This is what I saw:

I’ve never submitted before, so your allowed to tell me if I screwed up somewhere.
