Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

This looks okay at first, but when you start looking at the blonde girl more (click to see the larger version), you begin to realize something is really wrong with her body!  Her chest and head are coming at you, then her body makes a strange detour diagonally and then detours back so her legs are coming at you.  Her spine would have to be an S!  This being Churchill, I suspect it’s to show her butt and hip curve.
Also Dove (the girl in blue) seems to have dislocated her hip (again so we can see the precious precious butt curve).
Like an Escher painting, at first it looks okay, but when you really start looking at it, you go WTF? xD

Look at Kara’s right hip… how is her leg bending like that!?  (note to artists: Don’t draw a skirt hanging on the hips if you don’t know how to draw hips at 90 degrees)

Artists really need to learn that they can’t just shove legs anywhere they want on a female figure. XD

Oh good lord, look at Spider-Woman on the left O_O OUCH.

What the holy crap is wrong with Fairchild’s legs!?  One is too long, the other is WAY too short!  Plus, as @Aesmael put it: she’s got a serious case of Plasticine Leg.  It’s almost an afterthought that Rainmaker’s left hip has the usual “need to show butt curve” issues.

I.. just… what?  Look at her silhouette… her right hip is dislocated and where is that skirt coming from!?  It looks like she has a tail!

What. The. Hell. Is. That.  Ignoring the obligatory broken spine and dislocated hips, if you remove her breast and arm, then her back makes sense, but when you add in the breast and arm in profile, then it looks like she has something growing out of her back (which should also be in profile).  Dear artists: Perspective. PICK ONE.

One of her breasts is lower than the other.  But worse than that… look at her right hip, where is it bending at?  Hips are ball and socket joints people!

OKAY.  ARTISTS!  LISTEN UP!  You see that curve you keep drawing that attaches her leg to her waist?  That curve you love to draw so much?  That is her hip.  It is a ball and socket joint.  It rotates.  If the leg is not straight down, the hip should not be either!  Thank you for your time. :)
