Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

 Metal Gear: Mistral
Yeah, if you have a billion arms wouldn’t you too use two of them to prop up your breasts and another one to … masturbate?
Also: her pelvis is enormous and her head … I don’t even.

I suppose if you have that many hands, you might as well get yourself off while fighting people.  Xenia Onatopp, eat your heart out.
I’m waiting for somebody to Hawkeye Initiative this with Doctor Octopus. xD

Amazingly, this is not Liefeld, despite all the hidden feet, and her never ending pelvis.

Can I make a “Me-owch” pun?
Saw this advertised as one of THE Batman-related trades to read if you’re new to the mythology. Can we take a moment to talk about her left hip and spine (or rather, how neither seems to exist)? If you let your eyes drift out of focus, it looks as though her rib-cage is floating.

Plasticine body, and her pelvis is longer than her head.

“Incredible Warrior Woman”
Incredible - literally. Classic case of the no-support melon boobs.

I’m guessing those straps wouldn’t even be there if it wasn’t for a no nudity rule for the magazine.  Though, I am interested to see what that pelvis looks like without that piece of cloth.

This is totally off topic:
How To Draw Sci-Fi
How To Draw Star Wars
There, fixed it for you.

This is actually nice and realistic anatomy. The contours are believable and the musculature, while displaying artistic liberties, and makes sense on the body we’re seeing. Unfortunately, the artist isn’t as good as drawing humans as tentacle monsters.  The woman looks like she got caught in a quantum singularity.

Sorry about the long intro about Christopher Hart last time. I didn’t know you already have some posts on him. This one’s from “Drawing Cutting Edge Comics” on the subject “Classic Heroine Body”. Listen what he has to say: “And, don’t overlook this fine point: Her shoulders should be wider than her hips (…) It won’t make her look masculine. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Wide shoulders and wide hips, connected by a narrow waist, are extremely sexy.” It’s true, that is one sexy corpse.

And Now I am the dead...bleh!

I often talk with friends about potential Escher Girl images.

This is our conversation from last night:

Me: This is from a “how to draw”  book apparently.

Friend: This is what not to do then?

Me: … no.

Also, what is with all these “how to draw” artists and being so frightened about making women look “masculine”?  FFS, I think there’s some serious insecurities and projection going on.  Oh my god, if you don’t give her a broken spine, random high heels, battle thong, super long pelvis, and gravity defying boobs, people might be confused and turned off!

Even blow up dolls have bad dreams.

Shit, I know I just sent an article, but I found one that is probably better because it is the COVER of a BD, the thing that is supposed to sell it:

Can we, um.. talk about this?
What the hell is up with Jessica’s crotch and legs?! I could go on about what I think about this art, but I’ll keep in topical. Discuss.

Many things.
