Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

I’ve been meaning to refine this for a month but school keeps hammering on me so I’ll just go ahead and post it as-is. :P It’s supposed to look terrible anyway.

This fell out of my brain after spending a few hours reading the hilarious, depressing, and at times oddly inspiring Escher Girls blog, which deals with the fucking ridiculous “sexy” portrayals of women in comics, fantasy art, game art, etc. etc. etc.

My favorite panel is the one where her boobs are framing her face. I laughed so hard while I was drawing that panel that I had a bad stomach cramp afterward. That is how lame I am.

This is brilliant and you win the Internet today.

I love that panel where her boobs frame her face too!  The 2nd panel though really made me laugh because it took me a second to realize that wasn’t her hip, that was her butt cheek, it’s exactly how I feel when I get images for my tumblr and you really captured the WTFery!

Sexy Wolverine

(the best thing about using Wolverine for this? Other than the FABULOUS HAIR of course. If he accidentally breaks his spine while twisting, or chops off his junk while striking a pose with the claws extended, he’s got a HEALING FACTOR. /logic)

Sexy Wolverine

Awesome!  And yeah, his healing factor would fix him right up.  Unless he spent too long like that, would it just heal him in that position and he’d be stuck like this forever?  At least he’s lucky that with Psylocke around, he could ask her for tips on how to move around when you’re stuck in screwed up positions.

maxiandapril:

Okay,  so we started doing our workouts in the morning…BAD IDEA. Unfortunately one of us is a little more chipper at this hour. *cough* April *coughcough*

But anyway, we saw this comic book cover and we were like OMIGOD that looks exactly like us when we work out!

BAM! …..We so pro…….yo………….

K Bye

This actually looks way more plausible as exercise poses than as any sort of intimidating fighting warrior stance.

robinade:

What do you mean, comic books have girls pose in an overly sexualized and unrealistic way? Loki stands like this all the time!
#Escher Girls

Ahahahaha excellent!  I know at least a couple regular followers of this blog who are going to love you for this.

The fabulous Humon on deviantART just posted this up. As soon as I saw it, I thought of this blog.
Part of her comment about it:

…I’ve always been an “all or nothing” kinda’ girl when it came to skimpy armor, meaning either both men and women wear proper armor, or broth men and women wear ridicules ineffective armor that shows too much skin. It’s when only the women look like fantasy strippers that I get a bit pissed off. When I was a horny teenager being bored in school I made up a type of warriors that as a rule wore very little armor as a way of saying, “Fuck you! I don’t need armor to beat you!” to their enemies, and to feed my latent dominatrix mind they were of course ruled by a warrior queen. People within the universe were just as confused about the skimpiness as people in our world would be, so lets just say people noticed them.

So she gets the linkage and pageviews she deserves. :)
And you’re right, I am quite amused by this. xD  At least in her world, people are quite confused about what’s going on.  I’ve always wondered, in the superhero or video game worlds, do people stare at the female heroes and go “WHUH?”  (Also, here they have a dominitrix queen, what’s like… Psylocke’s excuse?  Or is Xavier secretly a dominitrix king?  Or Cyclops. >_>)

I have made it all make sense.
We now have, clockwise from top left:1) the scenario going on between the aliens depicted by the original artist, which was not actually a fight scene at all, but a desperate attempt to cooperate despite the mind-controlling tentacle creatures attached to their heads.
2) the original art.
3) what a fight scene between Artemis and Diana might look like, on a cliff in the moonlight in a temperate summer rainforest.
4) a context in which the poses of the aliens make sense for human characters.

I love all of this.

Just wanted to offer a small sketch in honor of your blog.

If the image I submit is a bit distorted, please feel free to nab it from my blog,  http://nosecondpassword.blogspot.com/

Thanks for making me laugh and cry whenever I check the latest submissions.

I play a Chiss Operative in TOR and when I stand still while shooting she moves her upper body to keep the target in front of her… this usually isn’t an issue until sometimes her lower body doesn’t try to move. I have two screen shots of how it looks and it really wigged me out. I haven’t seen any in game screen shots on the site but I thought this would amuse you.

Snap!

Crunch!

The second one actually looks like a hilarious boobs and butt pose you’d expect from a comic book. Clearly I should put her in the slave girl outfit when recreate this pose for maximum affect.

I cracked up laughing at that last picture.  Maybe that’s what’s happening.  Comic artists are referencing their MMORPG characters!

And now, thanks to you, I can’t get the image of Grand Admiral Thrawn doing the boobs and butt pose out of my head.  It’s making me so amused.  (I have a huge crush on Grand Admiral Thrawn.)
