Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

If that’s her shoulder on the far left, I’m not entirely sure what happened to her neck.  Oh god, Pantene, what have you done?

This isn’t an ad for shampoo, it’s an ad for the new Eva Mendes life-like facemask.  Whoever they got to hold it is an excellent hand model, by the way.

There is so much wrong with this. From the lack of organs to the butt displacement to the calf about to snap off to the headline.

A) Isn’t this kind of a bad idea?  Using photoshop to set a standard you might not be able to deliver?
B) I wonder if she consented to her image being used, much less being altered.  I (and people I know) have had experiences of dating/sex sites using images of amateur photos without the permission of the owner.
C) “Women who can’t say no” has disturbing implications.  Especially with “can’t” underlined.
Edit: http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/16193666201/roundaboutparker-replied-to-your-post-re There was originally some controversy if she’d been photoshopped because this model is well known for having curvy proportions, but somebody did an animated gif with the picture this was taken from and indeed she has been photoshopped. (I added it into the post so you can see without having to go to the other post.)

Took this into Photoshop for a quick peek. So here’s a quick gif of the two pictures alternating: i41.tinypic.com/mtp6vn…. - As you can see she’s definitely been Photo-Chopped. Just goes to show how the smalls stuff adds up to WTF.
Thanks for doing this!  I knew she didn’t look the same!  So don’t feel bad Veraliana, you have a good eye. :)  As I said before, why do you need to touch her up even further?  She already had curves and proportions that society sees as attractive, and we have to Liefeld her up?

That’s the original post that started this 3 part series by the way.

Could you please do the honours and break down why the total blatant destruction of a real female body into the hideous comic book stereotype of women is so absolutely disgusting?

I’m afraid if I try I’ll end up fuming and biting my keyboard into pieces before I’ve managed a coherent analysis.

* an added note…

I didn’t think to look through the guy’s gallery at first, but I just did, and what I’ve seen in there only further disgusts me.

Not just because his cheesecake tendencies drove him so far as to edit out the natural crease between bicep and forearm formed by the bending of the elbow, because apparently women can’t have ANY LINES AT ALL ANYWHERE ON THEIR BODIES EVEN WHEN THEY’RE NOT EVEN AGE LINES AND—I can’t continue anymore on that note without aforementioned biting of my keyboard into pieces.

But because he also has plenty of natural looking pictures of women from the front and such—you know, poses that try as you might, just can’t be edited into centaur bodies, and there are so many centaur bodies in this gallery, which are real women which just sickens me further—that, aside from airbrushing skin, he hasn’t really touched. Not even to create sphere boob.

So this guy does know what the real female body looks like and what it can anatomically do.

He’s just blatantly ignoring it. Because teh sexy.

I just—I can’t. I can not. Not without breaking things.

At least he didn’t give her flesh heels.  Be thankful for small favors.

(Actually, I honestly think it’d be way cooler if he made them into full centaurs)

I’m officially disturbed.

Victoria’s Secret is rather gruesome

I’m not sure if this qualifies, it being an ad and not exactly related to the big 3 (comics, video games… well I guess you could argue it’s “fantasy” art).

Is it just me or is the girl in the middle… broken?

Not just you, it’s a Photoshop disaster.  It’s scary when ads alter real life to look more like fictitious life.  Usually when we say we want real women’s poses to match up with comics, we mean comics should change, not… Photoshop atrocities.

That middle girl is getting terrifyingly close to:

that.

What really gets me about this cover is if they weren’t trying so hard to show the boob (which they borked horrifically), I’d think it was a pretty decent cover.

20 points for not breaking her spine to show boobs and butt.  -2000 points for deciding to shop a boob into her armpit instead.

… is this real life? The photo looks real, and the model is a real person (Simona Fusco), but that pose is outrageous.

I don’t know if I’m allowed to post this (as per the Terms of Submission), but the credit’s right there on the photo, and I’m genuinely baffled about it, and wanted your opinion.

If this isn’t photoshop, then there’s somebody running around out there chopping up women and taking pictures of them and we need to be really concerned.

Hi, I tried doing a line thing for this (I am no expert on anatomy by far, but…). I still have no idea what the hell her shoulders are doing there, and her shoulder blade seems to be taking the name a bit too literally. Hope this helps, and if anyone has a better take I’d love to see it.
Her spine also seems too long and her legs seem plasticiney, but I might just be seeing things at this point.

Thanks for giving this a shot! And, I know what you mean, the more you look at some of these pictures the less sure you get about what you’re seeing.

I saw this ad while browsing the net, and it caught my attention because the model looks like a Photoshop train wreck. If this picture is any sort of natural, I would not advise taking their weight loss drug.

That is frightening.
