Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

I was watching Season 3 Transformers with my friend today and we both  noticed this scene and started cracking up at just how Arcee is posed when she’s supposedly in a fighting stance and shooting Sharkticons.  Female “action” poses don’t even spare female-coded robots apparently.

Oh Cyclops.  No wonder my friend thinks you’re one of the sexiest X-men.  (You know who you are.)

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/05/03/tron-uprising-trailer-disney-xd-animated-series/The screen cap they used to head the post pretty much explains it all.  That scene appears in the video around 1:04.  Granted, the art style has a lot of lanky, elongated bodies for everyone, so maybe the twisty pose matches what we’ll see throughout the show for all genders, but that doesn’t explain why someone had to stick a camera right up the girl’s butt.

Uh oh.  Ed Benes has a protege.

Here is something the boobs and butt pose can be used for.

*gasp* Maybe all the artists have been victims of this technique in the past and therefore understand it’s effectiveness, and I’ve just been snarking them in ignorance!

I was watching the old Transformers Beast Wars and this stroke me as odd, upon ambushing the predicons the maximals were all in rather strong and ready to fight plane poses except for airrazor the only female who is sitting a little bit too curvily with no real logic behidn that pose, I suppose it could be worse, but draping around optimus’ leg like that does leave to question just how battle ready she is.

I remember seeing this a long time ago.  That’s so bizarre.  Even robots huh?  This makes me sad as a Beast Wars fan.
Interestingly, we see Arcee in recent comics in a similar pose (even more bizarrely with the person she’s fighting in the actual comic)

This clip just seemed all too appropriate. Thanks for all your posts.

First time posting, you could scold me if I’m naughty
Found this one in an anime forum. It’s an anime about transforming robots aimed at children between 9-12 yo. Escher girls has made impossible for me to look at anything without noticing this stuff.

Yeah, Escher Girls has changed how I look at things too.  I am a lot more amused at the world.  It’s like seeing the Fedex arrow.
Maybe she’s also a transforming robot?

I was browsing the internet when I came across this advertisement and had to stop for a minute to try and process the anatomy;
Out of morbid curiosity, I looked the show up and found that it was a CGI Christian cartoon aimed at kids six and up. Which was why I kinda wanted to beat my head in when I found this picture in the profile of the purple-haired chick featured above;

Wouldn’t having a giant easy to grab ponytail coming out of your armor be kind of a bad idea?

I’ve been a big fan of your blog for a while now—thanks so much for what you do! I wanted to submit this as an example of doing it right, both in terms of pose and armor design. It’s Brienne from HBO’s Game of Thrones (the photo’s from the upcoming third season).

Very cool! :)

This is the stuff nightmares are made of.
