Escher Girls

Float like a butterfly, Sting like a WTF!?

This is a blog to archive and showcase the prevalence of certain ways women are depicted in illustrated pop media, specifically how women are posed, drawn, distorted, and/or sexualized out of context, often in ridiculous, impossible or disturbing ways that sacrifice storytelling.

See the "About" section in the sidebar for more details.

Have you posted this comic yet?

No! I haven’t even seen it before. This is excellent and illustrates the false equivalence of that troll tactic so well, and without even getting into the lack of large penis bulges or outlines! Great point, simply the expressions on the faces and how they’re drawn makes a big difference.

Thanks for showing me! And yup, that’s pretty much it. xD

A nice example of how to draw ladies in comics

Commissioned Comic did a funny piece today about how to draw ladies if you look at comic art as examples: http://www.commissionedcomic.com/?p=4766.

I saw this and thought of this blog.

They actually mention Escher Girls in the commentary as their inspiration so that’s probably why it seems so similar. (I’m also flattered that I’m inspiring funny webcomic strips :3 )

On Discomfort
Was just recently going through some old picture files and found this Penny Arcade strip from 2004. Now I think of it when I get out some of the pics on this site. Hope you enjoy!

That’s a totally fitting comic for some of the stuff on this blog.

Kate Beaton makes the most wonderful parodies on Escher-girls (and ridiculous female character design in general)

That was supposed to be a parody? I thought it was a documentary.

I wasn’t sure you’d seen this yet but I thought you’d get a kick out of it. Scroll down to the evolution of a female comic character:The Evolution of Fictional Characters By Medium [COMIC]

I hadn’t actually seen this before! That’s hilarious, and sadly true. (I especially love how the male character went through the 90s, then got his old costume back but with a slightly darker color scheme.) If it keeps going, she’d probably be aiming her gun towards us while her butt is facing us.
